Benno Albrecht
Principal investigator
Benno Albrecht is full professor of architectural and urban composition at Università Iuav di Venezia, where he founded and directed the Master of Architecture for Sustainability, the first course dedicated to sustainability in Italy and one of the first in Europe.
He is rector of the Università Iuav di Venezia and author of numerous books and research products including Conservare il Futuro (2012) and Le Origini dell’Architettura (2002), written with Leonardo Benevolo.
He has been the Principal Investigator of research projects for several international organisations: World Bank – World Bank for Reconstruction, UN ESCWA – Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, UNDP – United Nations Development Programme.
Jacopo Galli
Principal investigator
Jacopo Galli (Crema, 1985) is an associate researcher at Università Iuav di Venezia. He obtained his Ph.D. with a dissertation titled Tropical Toolbox. Fry&Drew and the search for an African Modernity.
His research interests include the development and conservation of the historical cores and he was involved in the exhibitions Esportare il Centro Storico (Triennale Xtra Brescia) and Il Belpaese. 1 progetto x 22.621 centri storici (La Triennale Milano).
Since 2014 he has devoted his work to the theme of urbicides and reconstruction by organizing the conference Urbicide Syria (with Wesam Asali), the Sketch for Syria initiative and the international workshop W.A.Ve 2017 Syria the Making of the Future. He was a consultant for UN-ESCWA, UNDP and the World Bank program Building for Peace in MENA.
Marco Marino

Marco Marino (Vicenza, 1991) is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Università Iuav di Venezia. He obtained his Ph.D. with a dissertation titled Il progetto della Città Medievale. Indagine sulla crescita di San Gimignano.
His research interests include the development and conservation of the Italian historical cores and he was involved in the exhibition Il Belpaese. 1 progetto x 22.621 centri storici (La Triennale Milano).
Since 2017 he has devoted his work to the theme of urbicides and reconstruction and is part of the Urbicide Task Force. He is an associate researcher for FEEM Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei.
Andrea Fantin

Andrea Fantin (Padova, 1990) is a Ph. D. Student at the Department of Architecture and Arts, Università Iuav di Venezia.
His research, The Valley Section and the Geography of Water, rediscovers the contemporary value of Patrick Geddes’ concepts. Co-author of the Atlas of Metropolitan Regions – Designing Territorial Metabolism – and The city as a Renewable Resource; he is currently part of the Urbicide Task Force, a multidisciplinary think tank on architectural and urban reconstruction strategies and Epic – Earth and Polis Research Center.
Since 2018, he works also as a consultant for TSPA (Thomas Stellmach Planning and Architecture) a start-up based in Berlin, Germany, supporting the analytic and design branch through the lens of GIS and flow analysis.
Serena Pappalardo

Serena Pappalardo (Catania, 1991) is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Università Iuav di Venezia. She obtained her Ph.D. with a dissertation titled Le origini del Progressive Development Approach. I paradigmi di una progettazione incrementale. Her research interests include incremental and aided self-help projects in developing countries. She is currently part of the Urbicide Task Force, a multidisciplinary think tank on architectural and urban reconstruction strategies and Epic – Earth and Polis Research Center.
Giulia Piacenti

Giulia Piacenti (Scandiano, 1991) is a Ph. D. student at the Department of Architecture and Arts, Università Iuav di Venezia, where she graduated with the thesis Sustainable reconstruction for Aleppo: Historical core (2016). In 2018 she attended a Master’s Degree program in Urban Heritage and Global Tourism.
Her research focuses on urban morphology with a particular interest in neighbourhoods.
She is currently part of the Urbicide Task Force, a multi-disciplinary think tank on architectural and urban reconstruction strategies, and Epic – Earth and Polis Research Centre.
Sabrina Righi

Sabrina Righi (Padova, 1994) is a Ph.D. Student at Department of Architecture and Arts at Università Iuav di Venezia where she graduated with the tesis Urbicide Mosul: Public hierarchies as a trigger for reconstruction (2019).
In 2020 she achieved a Master in Bim and Hbim for digitalization of built heritage at Università degli Studi di Padova. Her research, in partnership with Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, focuses on the review of the regional territory management plan (PGT).
Chiara Semenzin
Ph. D. Student
Chiara Semenzin (Montebelluna, 1992) is a Ph.D. Student at the Department of Architecture and Arts at Università Iuav di Venezia where she also graduated. Her research focuses on Friuli’s reconstruction strategy after the 1976 earthquake. She was a tutor and responsible for the organization of MHT – master in Urban Heritage and Global Tourism – at Iuav university.
In continuity with her thesis on events as a means of urban regeneration for small historic villages, she is also involved in cultural promotion and organization.
Elisa Vendemini

Elisa Vendemini (Rimini, 1990) is a Ph.D. Student at the Department of Architecture and Arts at Università Iuav di Venezia where she graduated with honors and attended a Postgraduate Specialisation.
Her research focuses on the social inclusion of minority groups in urban spaces.
She was employed as a consultant and researcher at Aga Khan Trust for Culture, American University of Beirut (Lebanon) and Escola da Cidade (Brazil). She is currently part of the Iuav research team Urbicide Task Force.
